Camille is the French form of the Latin Camilla, the name of a warrior maiden in Virgil's Aeneid; its meaning is uncertain, though it is usually explained as "young ceremonial attendant" or "acolyte", after the camillus who served at Roman sacrifices. In France Camille is used for both sexes, and the sculptor Camille Claudel is its most famous female bearer. In the United States Camille has been remarkably steady, moving from number 269 in 2000 to number 240 among girls' names in 2025.
