Caesar was the family name of Julius Caesar; its origin is uncertain and was explained by the Romans themselves as "hairy" (from caesaries) or "cut from the womb" (from caedere). The name became the title of Roman emperors and lives on in the words Kaiser and Tsar. In the United States Caesar is far rarer than its Spanish form Cesar: it ranked number 1693 in 2015 and number 2843 in 2025.
