Brittany is the English name of the French region Bretagne, which means "land of the Britons" after the Celtic settlers who crossed the Channel in the early Middle Ages. It was one of the defining names of the late 1980s and early 1990s, when it ranked in the top 10, and singer Britney Spears carried a variant spelling. Brittany was still number 60 in 2000, but has fallen fast since then, to number 462 in 2015 and number 928 in 2025.
