Amanda is a Latin name that means "worthy of love" or "lovable", from amare, to love; it was coined by 17th-century English playwrights and poets rather than inherited from antiquity. In America it was one of the defining names of the 1980s, when it sat in the top five for years. Amanda was still number 32 in 2000 but has dropped steadily since, falling out of the top 100 and ranking number 493 in 2025.
