Cheyenne is the name of a Native American people of the Great Plains and of the capital of Wyoming; the word comes from the Dakota Sioux and is usually explained as "people of a different speech" or "red talkers". It became a popular girls' name in the 1990s on the wave of Western and place names like Sierra and Dakota. Cheyenne was still in the top 100 in 2000, at number 99, but has slid steadily since, to number 346 in 2015 and number 920 in 2025.
