Aviel is a Hebrew name that means "God is my father", from av, father, and el, God; it appears in the Bible as Abiel, the grandfather of King Saul. The modern Israeli spelling Aviel has a softer sound than the biblical form. In the United States Aviel has slowly gained ground, from number 2812 in 2015 to number 1394 in 2025, the best rank it has ever had.
