Austin is the medieval English contraction of Augustine and goes back to the Latin Augustus, meaning "great" or "venerable". Stephen F. Austin, the founding father of Texas, gave his name to the state capital, which adds a Texan flavor to the name. Austin ranked number 23 in 2000, stayed in the US top 100 through 2021 and stands at number 113 in 2025.
