Atreyu was invented by Michael Ende for the young warrior in The Neverending Story (1979); in the novel the name is said to mean "son of all", because the boy was raised by his whole tribe after his parents died. The 1984 film carried the name to American audiences and inspired a generation of fans. Atreyu peaked at number 1224 in 2018 and ranks number 1839 in 2025.
