Amare is an Ethiopian name from the Amharic language that means "handsome" or "he is handsome"; English speakers also hear the Latin amare, "to love", in it. Its American run coincided with the NBA career of Amar'e Stoudemire, who entered the league in 2002. Amare joined the US top 1000 in 2005, peaked at number 427 in 2011, fell out of the top 1000 after 2016 and ranks number 2333 in 2025.
