Amar has two separate sources: in Arabic it is a form of Ammar and means "long-lived" or "prosperous", while in Sanskrit it means "immortal". It is used by Muslim families across the Middle East and the Balkans, especially in Bosnia, and by Hindu and Sikh families in India. In the United States Amar has stayed fairly level for 25 years, ranking number 1408 in 2000, peaking at number 1103 in 2003 and standing at number 1388 in 2025.
