Amani has two roots that reinforce each other: in Arabic it means "wishes" or aspirations, and in Swahili it means "peace", which has made it popular with African-American families. It is used for both girls and boys and sits comfortably next to Imani, Amara and Zuri. In the United States Amani has been in the top 1000 since 2000, peaked at number 553 in 2010 and ranks 678 in 2025.
