Adeline is a French diminutive of Adela, from the Germanic adal, and means "noble" or "of noble kind". The 1903 barbershop song Sweet Adeline made it a household word in the United States, and it has returned with the fashion for vintage names ending in -line. Adeline ranked number 805 in the United States in 2000, jumped from number 135 in 2015 to number 63 in 2016, peaked at number 58 in 2024 and ranks number 59 among girls in 2025.
