Sophie is the French form of Sophia and means "wisdom". It has been a favorite in France, Britain and Germany for generations, and William Styron's novel Sophie's Choice brought it to American readers. In the United States Sophie ranked number 160 in 2000, rose to number 51 in 2011, dropped back to number 109 in 2016 and has climbed again every year since, reaching number 55 among girls in 2025.
