Sonya is the English spelling of Sonja, the Russian pet form of Sophia, and so means "wisdom". It came west through Russian literature, including Sonya in Tolstoy's War and Peace, and was a mid-century favorite in the United States. Sonya was still in the top 1000 at number 892 in 2000, but has since declined and ranks number 1939 in 2025.
