Sonia is the Russian pet form of Sofia and therefore means "wisdom". The spelling with an i spread through Spain, Italy and India, and in the United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is its best-known bearer. Sonia peaked at number 507 in 2000, drifted down the list, left the top 1000 for good after 2017 and ranks number 1307 in 2025.
