Skye is taken from the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Hebrides, whose name is of uncertain origin and is often explained as "winged island" or "cloud island", and it doubles as a softened spelling of the English word "sky". The island's dramatic landscape gives the name an outdoorsy, free-spirited feel. In the United States Skye has sat in the top 1000 since at least 2000, reached number 368 in 2014 and ranks number 532 among girls' names in 2025.
