Sean is the Irish form of John and means "God is gracious", from the Hebrew Yochanan; it came into English through the Norman French Jean. Sean Connery made the name an international favorite in the 1960s. In the United States Sean was number 57 in 2000, its best year in this century, and has slipped steadily since, ranking number 489 in 2025.
