Rey is the Spanish word for "king" and goes back to the Latin rex; as a given name it is often a short form of Reyes or Reynaldo and is common in Mexican American families. Fans of Star Wars also know it as the name of the heroine of the recent trilogy, but for boys the Spanish royal sense dominates. Rey has been in the US top 1000 every year since 2000, peaked at number 755 in 2018 and ranks 908th in 2025.
