Paisley is the name of a Scottish town near Glasgow, which probably comes from a Latin or Brittonic word meaning "church", and of the teardrop-shaped textile pattern that was woven there in the 19th century. As a given name it is a recent American invention with a Scottish lilt, and country singer Brad Paisley added to its appeal. Paisley ranked number 1919 in the United States in 2000, entered the top 1000 in 2006 and the top 100 in 2013, peaked at number 45 in 2015 and ranks number 67 among girls in 2025.
