Osman is the Turkish form of the Arabic Uthman, a name of uncertain meaning that is traditionally explained as "baby bustard" or "young snake". Osman I founded the Ottoman Empire around 1299, and the dynasty took its name from him, which makes the name a classic across Turkey, the Balkans and the Horn of Africa. In the United States Osman entered the top 1000 in 2021, peaked at number 977 in 2022 and stands at number 1157 in 2025.
