Oscar is usually traced to the Irish os and cara and means "deer friend" or "friend of deer"; in the 18th-century Ossian poems Oscar was the grandson of Fionn mac Cumhaill, and Napoleon's admiration for those poems carried the name to the Swedish royal family. Oscar Wilde, Oscar de la Renta and the Academy Award statue keep it in everyday use. Oscar ranked number 122 in the United States in 2000, peaked at number 117 in 2005 and has held between 177 and 226 for the whole past decade, standing at number 223 in 2025.
