Hugo is the Latinized form of Hugh, a Germanic name from hug, meaning "mind", "heart" or "spirit". Victor Hugo, the author of Les Misérables, and Martin Scorsese's 2011 film Hugo have kept it in the public eye, and the name is hugely popular in France, Spain and Sweden. Hugo has been in the US top 1000 throughout this century and ranks number 378 in 2025, close to its level of number 399 in 2000.
