Miranda comes from the Latin mirandus and means "admirable" or "worthy of admiration". Shakespeare coined it for the heroine of The Tempest, the daughter of Prospero who grows up on an enchanted island. In the United States Miranda was number 112 in 2000, had eased to 280 by 2015 and ranks 656 among girls' names in 2025.
