Mayra is a Spanish and Portuguese spelling of Myra, a name invented by the 17th-century poet Fulke Greville, probably from the Latin myrrha, "myrrh", or as an anagram of Mary; in Spanish it is also linked to the month of May, "born in May". It has been a favorite in Mexico and among Mexican American families since the 1970s. Mayra peaked at number 478 in 2000, left the top 1000 in the following years and ranks number 2168 in 2025.
