Mauro is the Italian, Spanish and Portuguese form of the Latin Maurus, which means "Moor" or "man from Mauretania", the Roman name for northwest Africa, and was later understood as "dark-skinned". Saint Maurus was a disciple of Saint Benedict in the 6th century. In the United States the name is used chiefly in Hispanic and Italian American families and has stayed outside the top 1000, ranking number 1490 in 2025.
