Luis is the Spanish form of Louis, which goes back to the Germanic Hludwig and means "famous warrior" or "renowned in battle". It was the name of kings of Spain and Portugal and remains a classic in Spanish-speaking families across the Americas. In the United States Luis ranked 49th in 2000, stayed in the top 100 into the early 2010s and stands at number 144 in 2025.
