Luella is an American combination name created in the 19th century from Lou, the short form of Louise, and Ella; it therefore joins Louise's meaning, "famous warrior", with Ella's "light" or "fairy maiden". It was at its height around 1900 and fell out of use after the 1940s, until the current fondness for Ella names brought it back. Luella entered the US top 1000 in 2023 and ranks number 780 in 2025, its best rank since the mid-20th century.
