Lucille is the French form of the Latin Lucilla, a diminutive of Lucia, and means "light" or "little light", from lux. Lucille Ball, star of I Love Lucy, is the name's great American bearer, and B.B. King called his guitar Lucille. After decades of neglect the name has found new life: Lucille was number 1269 in 2000, re-entered the US top 1000 in 2003 and ranks number 239 among girls' names in 2025, its best position in this century.
