Lotus is the name of the water flower, from the Greek lotos, and carries the meaning "purity" and "rebirth" that the plant has in Buddhism and Hinduism, where it rises clean from muddy water. Like Juniper and Magnolia it belongs to the new generation of botanical names, with a more exotic ring than Lily or Rose. Lotus stood at number 2307 in 2015, peaked at number 1521 in 2021 and ranks 1826 in 2025.
