Liz is the briskest short form of Elizabeth, which comes from the Hebrew Elisheva and means "my God is an oath" or "God is my abundance". Elizabeth Taylor was Liz to the whole world, and the nickname has a no-nonsense, grown-up ring that few other pet names manage. As a name in its own right Liz has climbed from number 2,202 in 2000 to a best rank of number 1,172 in 2023 and sits at number 1,259 in 2025.
