Libby started out as a nickname for Elizabeth, the Hebrew name meaning "my God is an oath" or "God is abundance", and in the United States it is also heard as a short form of Liberty. It has a cheerful, old-fashioned sound that has made it a stand-alone name in Britain and America alike. Libby entered the US top 1000 in 2002, peaked at number 781 in 2005 and ranks 1146 in 2025.
