Lexie is a short form of Alexis and Alexandra, which come from the Greek alexein, to defend, and mean "defender" or "defender of the people". It grew into an independent name in the United States in the 1990s, when Alexis was a top 20 name. Lexie ranked number 555 in 2000, peaked at number 467 in 2010, dropped out of the top 1000 in 2023 and stands at number 1357 in 2025.
