Jovie is a modern American name drawn from the word jovial, "joyful" or "cheerful", which itself goes back to Jove, the Roman Jupiter. It owes its spread to the 2003 Christmas comedy Elf, in which Zooey Deschanel plays Jovie, the department-store elf who wins Buddy's heart. Jovie had fewer than five US births in 2000, entered the top 1000 in 2020 and has risen to number 521 in 2025, its best rank so far.
