Joana is the Portuguese and Catalan form of Joanna, the feminine of John, and means "God is gracious". It is a classic in Portugal and Brazil and arrived in the United States mainly through Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking families. Joana was still in the top 1000 in 2000 at number 912 and peaked at number 698 in 2001, but it has slipped since and stood at number 2596 in 2025 with 67 girls.
