Joan is the Catalan form of John, from the Hebrew Yochanan, meaning "God is gracious"; it is pronounced zhoo-AHN and is one of the most common men's names in Catalonia, unrelated to the English girls' name. The painter Joan Miró is its most famous bearer. In the United States Joan is given mainly in Hispanic families; it ranked number 782 in 2002, spent the 2010s around number 1100 and reentered the top 1000 at number 987 in 2025.
