Jon is a short form of Jonathan, the Hebrew Yehonatan, meaning "God has given", and is also a Scandinavian form of John, "God is gracious". The spelling without an h gained ground in the United States in the mid-20th century, and Jon Bon Jovi and Jon Stewart have kept it in the public eye. Jon has been in the US top 1000 every year since 2000, when it ranked number 354, and stands at number 951 in 2025.
