Jan is the Dutch, Czech, Polish and Scandinavian form of John and shares its Hebrew meaning, "God is gracious". It is one of the most common male names across Central and Northern Europe, borne by the Dutch painter Jan Vermeer and the Czech reformer Jan Hus. In the United States Jan was still in the top 1000 in 2000 at number 837 and peaked at number 758 in 2006, but it has since dropped to number 2731 in 2025.
