Imogene

What does the name Imogene mean?

Imogene is the American form of Imogen, a name that was apparently born of a misprint: Shakespeare's heroine in Cymbeline was probably meant to be Innogen, a Celtic name usually explained as "maiden" or "daughter", from the Irish inghean. The comedian Imogene Coca, Sid Caesar's partner on Your Show of Shows, made the spelling familiar in mid-century America. Imogene was almost forgotten by 2000, at number 15964, and has quietly returned, reaching number 2474 in 2024 and number 2521 in 2025.
