Gianluca is an Italian compound of Gianni, the short form of Giovanni (John, "God is gracious"), and Luca, from the Latin Lucas, "man from Lucania" or, by popular association, "light". Such double names are a hallmark of Italian naming and have been popular in Italy since the 1970s. In the United States Gianluca entered the top 1000 once, at number 988 in 2017, and ranks 1156 in 2025.
