Florian comes from the Roman family name Florianus, derived from florus, "flowering" or "blooming". Saint Florian, a Roman officer martyred in Austria in 304, is the patron saint of firefighters, and his name is a classic in Germany, Austria, Poland and France. In the United States Florian has always been rare: it stood at number 4454 in 2000 and climbed to number 2495 in 2025, its best rank so far, with 54 boys given the name.
