Echo is the Greek word for a "reverberating sound" and the name of a mountain nymph in Greek mythology, who was condemned to repeat only the last words spoken to her and pined away for Narcissus. The myth gives the name a wistful, poetic quality. In the United States Echo rose from number 1833 in 2015 to number 1421 in 2021, its best rank so far, and has eased back to number 2339 in 2025.
