Ebenezer comes from the Hebrew Even ha-Ezer and means "stone of help", the name the prophet Samuel gave to a memorial stone after a victory over the Philistines. Puritans brought it to New England, but Dickens's miser Ebenezer Scrooge gave it a gruff reputation that it has never quite shaken off. In the United States Ebenezer ranked number 3814 in 2000, peaked at number 2356 in 2017 and stands at number 2544 in 2025.
