Dora is a short form of Dorothea, Theodora and Isidora and goes back to the Greek doron, "gift". It was a popular name on its own in the 19th century, appearing in Dickens's David Copperfield, and a new generation knows it from the cartoon Dora the Explorer. Dora reached number 1219 in 2001 in the United States and has settled at number 2388 in 2025.
