Betty

What does the name Betty mean?

Betty is the English pet form of Elizabeth, from the Hebrew Elisheva, "God is my oath". Betty White, Betty Ford and the cartoon flapper Betty Boop made it a thoroughly American name, and in the late 1920s and 1930s it was the second most popular girls' name in the country. Betty had slipped to number 1150 by 2000, but like other grandmother names it is stirring again, reaching number 1012 in 2024 and number 1113 in 2025.
