Azrael goes back to the Hebrew Azar'el and means "God helps" or "helped by God". In Jewish and Islamic tradition Azrael is the name of the angel of death, which gives the name a dark, dramatic edge that fits the current taste for Azael, Ezekiel and other strong biblical sounds. In the United States Azrael was number 2134 in 2015, entered the top 1000 in 2019 and has risen to 656 in 2025, its best rank so far.
