Avril is the French word for "April", from the Latin Aprilis, which is often linked to aperire, "to open", for the month when buds open. Canadian singer Avril Lavigne introduced the name to most American parents in the early 2000s. Avril rose from number 8621 in 2000 to a peak of 1504 in 2008 and has held remarkably steady since, ranking between 1650 and 1875 every year and standing at number 1845 in 2025.
