Aveline is the Norman French form of the medieval Germanic name Avelina, whose root is uncertain but usually explained as avi, "desired" or "longed for"; it is the ancestor of the English name Evelyn. The Normans brought it to England in the 11th century, and it also happens to be the French word for the hazelnut. In the United States Aveline peaked at number 1327 in 2016, slid to number 3466 in 2024 and rebounded to number 2585 in 2025 with 67 girls.
