April is the English name of the fourth month, from the Latin Aprilis, which the Romans themselves linked to aperire, "to open", for the month when buds open; a connection to Aphrodite has also been suggested. It became a popular girls' name in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s, when spring and nature names were in style. April ranked number 214 in 2000 and has slowly declined to number 542 among girls' names in 2025.
