Anton is the German, Scandinavian and Slavic form of Anthony, from the Roman family name Antonius, whose meaning is uncertain; the traditional reading "priceless" comes from a later link to the Greek anthos. The playwright Anton Chekhov is its best-known bearer. In the United States Anton ranked number 701 in 2000, peaked at number 651 in 2002 and has slipped slowly since, leaving the top 1000 around 2018 and standing at number 1389 in 2025.
