Akeem is an American spelling of the Arabic Hakeem, meaning "wise" or "judicious", one of the ninety-nine names of God in Islam, and is common in Nigeria among Yoruba Muslims. The basketball great Hakeem Olajuwon played his first NBA seasons as Akeem, and Eddie Murphy's Prince Akeem in Coming to America fixed the spelling in American minds in 1988.
